Afilias use to have some heavy promotions on .info from time to time to increase the number of registered .info domains so they can "brag" about how popular the extension is... (my opinion.)
But a year after those stunts tons of .info domains gets dropped since a high percentage of those cheap or free .info domains never gets developed, and many spammers takes advantage of the free/cheap domains so .info are (unfortunately) not very popular for website use by many due to the high number of spam sites using .info...
I personally tend to stay away from .info domains, unless they contain very good keywords.
