I would suggest using 7-zip. It helps out a lot, is lightweight and free. Its pretty fast and supports most file types. You really need to figure out what kind of file it is. Thats pretty odd that it doesn't have an extension on it. I know that happened to me once, and I played around till I found one that worked. Not the smartest thing, but it works.
