I've tested it a while ago on my old computer and it works fine.
The fan speed and noise gets reduced.

But it can be a bit tricky to remove the wires from the connector, so it can be a good idea to have a spare or two since you may break it when you remove/connect the wires (depending on the connector type)

But I haven't needed to mod the fans the last couple of years since silent running case fans are really cheap now anyway.
