Post - Cyberspace "Red-Light District" .xxx rejected again..

Quote:
LISBON, Portugal (AP) -- The agency that sets the Internet addressing guidelines influencing how people navigate the Web defeated a proposal Friday to give adult Web sites their own ".xxx" domain.

Many in the adult-entertainment industry and religious groups alike had criticized the plan, which the Canadian government also warned this week could leave the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers in the tricky business of content regulation.

The 9-5 decision by ICANN's board came nearly seven years after the proposal was first floated by ICM Registry LLC. It was the third time ICANN has rejected such a bid. One member abstained from voting.

Many of the board members said they were concerned about the possibility that ICANN could find itself in the content regulation business if the domain name was approved. Others criticized that, saying ICANN should not block new domains over fears like that, noting that local, state and national laws could be used to decide what is pornographic and what is not.

It was not immediately clear if ICM would revise its proposal again, abandon the bid or perhaps appeal the decision or take action through the courts.

Still no red-light disctrict on the internet...
I personally don't think an .xxx top-level domain will reduce the amount of porn on other domains at all.
Some countries may allow porn on .xxx only, but that doesn't prevent people from hiring servers in other countries and use the other TLD's there...

I think it would be a good idea to do this and can't understand why it can't be agreed on. The web is full of it, at least it could all be put under one domain with laws stating that it could not be listed under any other domain.

The idea isn't too bad but I think that it will be very very difficult (if not impossible) to ban adult/pornographic content from most of the other TLDs and especially ccTLDs since most of the rules for them are created by the countries that "owns" them and there are a lot of countries out there that couldn't care less about the content on their ccTLDs as long as they get paid for selling/renting them out...

I think the idea is pointless, I mean why is the point of it? If its to make "kids" not get on them how wouldn't they?
