I'm trying to see if TLA ads work. (http://textlinkads.com) Some people say it's a rip-off, some people say it's the real thing. What do you think? What are your experiences with it?

I've not used them myself but you could certainly give it a try. Why not give it a month or so and see how it goes. Let us know if you decide to!

Were you asking if it works for traffic, or were you asking if people make money hosting ads?

I would use Adbrite instead because it has been around longer and isn't aiming to get you more hits from a search engine, whcih could change its parameters and render the ads you pay for totally useless.

If Darren of problogger has something good to say about TLA (even if he's paid to do so, which probably he was not), then it must work. I've also read that more surfers are clicking in-text link ads rather than banners...

If to judge by Matt Cutts blog, Google is going to fight bought ads.

And it will be much easier to detect bought ads that were bought through TLA.

So, what I would suggest you is finding the sites you want to be linked from ,and contact the webmaster yourself, and paying him directly.

This way you also save the 40% that goes to TLA.

I never tried them before but I think that they are good for those with a high traffic because it is extra revenue. The only problem is that Google might lower you page rank for doing so.
