Interesting move indeed. Company like this love to "try" new stuff. I am quite sure it is not as simple as a trial.

I heard that Ebay was having an event or something similar and Google decided to try and draw business from it in direct competition, which is what led Ebay to pull its Google ads. The experiment was probably to see how badly Google wanted Ebay's business.

I read it somewhere that the decision from Ebay to change their ad provider to Yahoo lead to boycott from Google. Those who got invited to a party or something similar didn't turn up at all.
