Started this thread as a final-thought area after you FINISH a game.
Its a bit of a dry spell for new games right now so I am working on games I never finished, I try to finish all the games I buy at least once.
I had stomach flu the past few days go that got me an extended gaming weekend. So in between the many matches of COD4 I also finished Overlord and Microsoft Freelancer.
Overlord was OK, could have been better. I was hoping for a more serious game, and instead it was more comedy about how 'evil' you were. In fact you weren't all that evil, which was a let down. Basically the game was like Lemmings (certain minions do X others to Y) with more action and a few RPG elements thrown in to boot. Wasn't bad but not what was I expecting.
Freelancer. Wing Commander Privateer was one of the best open-ended games I ever played. This game lacks the depth of privateer. The graphics are good for 2002 but the gameplay was boring as was the story. One problem was that you couldnt enjoy the vastness of the game without finishing the SP campaign first, and by then what was the point? You already had the most powerful ship and weapons in the game. You couldn't advance in the game without continuing the story. Combat was dull, all missiles, mines, etc were a waste. And worst traveling through space could be a extremely long affair, because the campaign blocked off areas that would have made good shortcuts, requiring you to take the long way around. One cargo-hauling trek took 1 hour in real time to get from point A to point B. Sound like fun? it wasnt.
Many people like this game, but I couldn't wish it to end. A chore and a bore. Thankfully it was short and with exception of a few missions quite easy.
Currently working on X-MEN Legends II.
If you FINISH feel free to tell us what you think.
Been working on The Witcher for a while, but still got quite a lot left to do there..
I reached level 50 on Lord of the Rings Online and stopped playing it a while ago..
does that count??
The last game I think I finished was actually a real classic; Star Control 2 (again, probably for the 7th or 8th time... )
That's a classic game I REALLY would love to see a modern remake of..
Finished another one, Company of Duty: Opposing Force.
I first did the German Campaign and I just finished the British. I really liked it, it includes two new Armies: the Panzer Elite and the British 2nd Army.
The PE is primary a mechanized force specializing in Mobile Anti-Tank units while the British are a purely defensive army with big AT guns, trenches, mortar pits etc. The very different strategies needed keeps the game interesting. I love playing the British as their specialty is Artillery, the bigger the bang the better. They also get one of my favorite tanks, the Sherman Firefly.
Plus if you have the Original game you can add all 4 Armies (US, Wehrmacht, PE, British).
Its not a huge evolution from the original COH, but if you liked the 1st you'll like this one.
I just finished Moonstone on Winuae, does that count?
Moonstone's got to be one of the best Amiga games ever, and I have no idea how many times I've rounded since I first tried it many many years ago (released in 1991)..
OK finished another, took along time (about 3 years) as I had several restarts but I finally finished THQ The PUNISHER.
Game wise it was good (not great). Its basically a MAX PAYNE clone but with some differences. It should be said that I am a huge PUNISHER fan, and that the game is based more off the COMICS than the so-so movie.
Despite excellant source material the game is weakened by a stupid AI and some game mechanics that are wonky at best. This a shame because this game could have been an EXCELLENT title, we probably wont see a punisher 2 due to weak box office sales. The games strengths are its faithful following of the PUNISHER canon, the interrogation system (torture suspects into giving clues) and the ruthless brutality of the Punisher.
Like the Comics, the Punisher is not a kids game, its so violent it has one of the rare titles to get a AO rating.
OK Got another one done, another game that was sitting on my shelves for a while. The good think about being unemployed, more time for gaming.
F.E.A.R and F.E.A.R Extraction point.
My Ruling: Best SP FPS ever. It is better than COD4 and HL2.
The AI is incredible. Enemies flank, dive for cover, suppress and move, its by far the best AI I have seen. The graphics are slightly dated but the superior game play and story make up for this. The weapons feel right and are exciting. From a Plama gun that turns enemies into charred skeletons to a nail gun that harpoons enemies into walls where they stay attached.
The game is also very scary, although Alma is clearly inspired from the girl in "The Ring". Still there are some really scary moments. In one scene I climbed a ladder and right at the top of it Alma was right their to grab me. I jumped right out of my skin. As like a good horror movie The game is extremely gory, blood and guts are everywhere and enemies will die atrociously.
Anyone who likes ultra-violent FPS or horror stories would do well to check the game out. Highly recommended.
Only Criticism: Too Short. I finished both the Game and the Expansion Pack in 5 days, -about 15 hours total. Its not long, but its an incredible ride.
I really wanted to Like F.E.A.R. but it just didn't stick. I love love love horror-themed games so I was very excited about F.E.A.R. It was pretty scary and the a.i. felt quite real, but after a while I was just bored of walking around places that looked exactly the same and fighting villains that look almost exactly the same. If I were more into first person shooters then I probably would have liked it much more, but I need more story and variance.
I finished 'Red Dead Revolver' a few days ago and started playing the 'Devil May Cry' games in order to extend the life of my PS2 and play some of the ones that I never really got into but liked. They're all good games.
The last game i`ve finished is Gothic 3 and i have to say it`s great and i`ve started playing it again because i noticed that it has more than only one ending way. It`s the best game i`ve played so far.
