Well if you have a CRT on stand by and your computer idling you are using probably the equivalent of 2 75W light bulbs...When the computer is cranking you are looking at close to 250W just for it...So yeah it does add up...
So leaving a high end computer on 24/7 will cost you like $350 a year (a pretty good assumption)
Using a computer for a couple hours (2-3) a day will cost you like $6 bucks a year...
