Upgraded my computer ram from 2 to 4gb...after resetting the CMOS battery I am now able to connect to the internet on Vista but when I try to boot up on XP I don't get no network connection...I have no idea the problem and would love some help.

here is a more in depth scenario now...

First it all started when I went to upgrade from 2 gb of ram to 4 gb of ram and I reset my CMOS...after that I had a multiboot setup and I couldnt connect to the internet on windows xp pro but could connect in vista ultimate...i had this connection problem for about 2 months and let that go on till today...i reset my CMOS again and did my cpu parameter and memory configurations and now i got no internet connection on xp and on vista now as well...here is my setup:

I got my host computer down stairs and a router right next to the host computer. Its a basic wired Linksys Ethernetfast Cable/ DSL Router with 4 ports. I have my cable modem right near there as well and i got the ethernet cord feeding from that into my uplink port on my router and then a ethernet cord in port 1 feeding into my host computer port...Currently I have internet connection on my downstairs computer or host computer and upstairs my ethernet cord feeds into a switch and then I have a ethernet cord feeding into my computer and another into my PS3...this all was working perfectly fine until i reset my CMOS and something went wrong...i never configured my LINKSYS in the beginning i just have all my TCP/IP set to obtain IP and DNS automatically and this originally worked but now my ip address are conflicting for some reason and this started today...I cant even get internet connection to my upstairs computer with a straight ethernet cord from my modem into the ethernet port of that computer...

To recap: got hostcomp, router and cable modem downstairs...modem to router...router to host comp and to switch upstairs...switch to comp upstairs to PS3...this all was working but went to hell today...please professionally guidance would be greatly appreciated!!

it sounds like you have a good handle on computer jargon so here it goes...

start at the physical/data link layer:
un plug and re plug every Ethernet (rj-45) connector.
turn off your SWITCH
Unplug your router
unplug your modem
restart computer
on the xp boot open the command prompt and ping 127.0.0.1 if this is successful it isn't your card
- make sure your cables are connected on all devices
- boot your modem
- once it is up boot your router
- once it is up boot your switch
- on your XP machine go back in to the command prompt and do an ipconfig /all command
- if no ip is present reset your network interface card
- do ipconfig /all again
- if no ip still...
- plug PS3 directly in to router and make sure the machine can reach something online
- if it can the problem is the computer (try a fresh install) if it can't it is the router (check your dhcp settings and try taking the router off of the network and plug the PS3 in to the modem and try connecting to the internet again.)

That should keep you busy for about an hour. Let us know how it went. If there is anything in here that I didn't clarify enough PM me or reply. I will be on til about 2200 PST.

wow this post is old... well maybe it will help someone else.
