It's actually not used as extra RAM but as extra memory cache since the access time of USB sticks are much better than HDDs.
It's not good for larger files since the read/write speed of sticks are much slower than HDDs, but for smaller files that are often used it can mean a significant performance boost.
I use a 2Gb Corsair Voager GT stick for this myself, and it's actually working quite well for some programs and games...
