Post - Modifying WordPress Theme

I'm thinking of starting a health or a diet blog since I'm currently trying to lose some weight. I downloaded a theme and I'm thinking of modifying it so my blog would look unique. Is it legal? I mean, should I ask the designer of the theme first?

It depends, but in general it isn't a problem to modify free themes.
But you may have to leave the original authors link/signature if he demands that.
Free themes does usually come with a Readme file, or notes in the source code on what you're allowed to do with it..

Totally agree on that one. Most free themes usually carries a request by the designer to leave their link in although some allows us to remove them if we want. But I think it's still best to leave them in since it took some time and effort to make and the least we can do is give a link to their websites. Besides, I don't think readers are really concerned who made the theme as long as it looks good.
