I own one of the cheapest mp3s in the market, I bought it from a friend for $50... Its been over a year and it is still working.
It is a creative lap mp3, the sound quality is not the best but it has voice recorder..
well, i own a MP4 player which was made in China, not a brand. It has been over two years and it is still working! it changed my views on Chinese electronics. (we usually think Chinese electronics has bad quality.)
I have an old Creative Labs Zen Nano Plus with 1GB of storage. I'm listening to it right now. Battery cover snap broke off, and faceplate fell off once when I dropped it, but other than that (and static and occasional earbud shutoff because of so much use (I have the original buds) no problems. I do wish I had a larger one though.
I fear it may have finally bit the dust. audio channeling problems. I checked the earphones, and they're toast, but the main unit is still encountering issues...
UPDATE: Bought a new iPod Nano today, 8 GB and blue. I like it so far.

I'm glad to see this thread because I've been wondering about MP3 players in terms of whether or not there is anything comparable to an iPod for less money. Every year I buy myself a Christmas present, and this year it's going to be an MP3 player. If an iPod is definitely the best way to go, then so be it, but if there's a good alternative, I'll be glad to go that route.
I got myself a little mp3 player a few weeks back, it only cost me £20 and it doesn't sound too great but then I don't use it too often, so it's not too much of a problem. I hate the headphones and am thinking of buying some of those newer ones that you squash to fit in your ears, but having read a few reviews they don't always seem to fit so well If anyone has got any of these headphones can you please help me out and tell me if they really are as good as I've been told.
I've also just got me a nice shiny new samsung E250 mobile phone, with radio and mp3 player, just hope this sounds better than my little cheap one.

I'd go with the iPod, it's really superior to everything else.
