You know, with all the changes to the OS systems on the Microsoft computers, one has to wonder if it wouldn't be better to just go ahead and get a Mac or switch over to Linux.

It depends what you are doing.

If you are trying to run any Biz software of note, stay away from both. Linux is closing the gap fast but is not quiet there yet. Mac is simply not a business machine (although its used in a few specific industries, mainly for graphics). OpenOffice is good but its not quite at the level as Office (but its catching up fast).

Linux is not as user friend as the others. This is being addressed as we speak, Ubuntu Feisty Fawn 7.04 is much easier than previous versions.

Games, you still need Windows. This might change. I was just reading that there is there is a new software that instead of creating a windows emulation, instead creates a Windows Virtual machine tailored specifically for games. It supposedly blows WINE away in terms of compatibility and performance. I will try and remember the name...

So cataclysm hasn't hit Redmond Wash yet, but it will if they don't make some fundamental changes. Linux is coming.

Right now if you don't care about games and are running a home office
and are not a total noob to computers, then Linux is a good place to start.

Thanks for the reply. I am sure that I will have no choice but to upgrade. But I am one of those people that likes to basically see what others think about something before I upgrade. I haven't totally ruled it out just waiting a few before I get it.

I guess I'll keep XP until Microsoft stops supporting it for technical support. In the meantime, I'll keep plugging away, biding my time until Vista is more stable and I don't have a choice in the matter.

I'm afraid not. Letting Vista stabilize will cost us nothing but millions for M$. A new OS means another $400 from our pockets to theirs. Look, they've promised an SP3 for XP last year but looks like they've already forgotten about it so everybody will upgrade to Vista.

I'm running XP Pro on my desktop, watching Vista with interest. I'm in no hurry.

Does anyone here happen to know if Cubase SX and VST musical instruments would run on Vista?

LOL

I didn't know microsoft could also do time warps but that's an accurate observation. Something must be wrong with Vista, despite it's long incubation period, because M$ is already planning a new OS instead of trying to make Vista better.

For example:

Say you're copying a large file from one source to another. The copying file window might say "1 minute" (till completion) but when 10 (normal time) minutes go by and the window says '30 seconds', thats Microsoft time.

VISTA was no different. Longhorn was announced very shortly after XP was released and that it would be ready with 2-3 years. Then around 2003, MS was saying within a year (2004), but in fact it took 5 (normal) years to come out. The rule of thumb is whenever MS mentions a release date, add 6 months to it.

So when Microsoft says Vienna will be out in 2 years, you need to add an additional 2 years total (+1 additional year, the time they need to remove all the features they promised, but never got to work, like WinFS).
Hey but they were nice and fast on Win2000 after Me came out and stank out the joint.

They came out with 98/Me/2000/XP within 5-6 years

and with the way I abuse computers that's about right timewise.

The King Rides again!

I'm glad Vista came preloaded on my computer and I didn't spend anything for an upgrade. Even though I'm happy with Vista, I know a lot of people are not, and I would think the bad press will make people wary of yet another new operating system.
