Post - New Windows version to be released already in 2009

With Vista just out the door, Microsoft is now drawing up plans to deliver its follow-up client operating system by the end of 2009, according to the executive in charge of building the product's core components.

That would be a much faster turn-around than Vista, which shipped more than five years after Windows XP, but Vista was exceptional, said Ben Fathi, corporate vice president of development with Microsoft's Windows Core Operating System Division this week at the RSA Conference in San Francisco.

I wonder if we'll see a stable version of Vista before they release this new version...

Microsoft has used "Vienna" as the codename for the new version, but it looks like they've ditched that one in favor of a new (cool??) secret codename..

You have to realize Microsoft doesn't use the same time system normal people do. They are on "Microsoft time".

For example:

Say you're copying a large file from one source to another. The copying file window might say "1 minute" (till completion) but when 10 (normal time) minutes go by and the window says '30 seconds', thats Microsoft time.

VISTA was no different. Longhorn was announced very shortly after XP was released and that it would be ready with 2-3 years. Then around 2003, MS was saying within a year (2004), but in fact it took 5 (normal) years to come out. The rule of thumb is whenever MS mentions a release date, add 6 months to it.

So when Microsoft says Vienna will be out in 2 years, you need to add an additional 2 years total (+1 additional year, the time they need to remove all the features they promised, but never got to work, like WinFS).

oh, ok. now i understand how the whole thing works. i guess microsoft just slows time down, so it seems like the time they promised.

I have my very own time system, Sunb!'s time. I still run Win3.1 on one of my older machines but have had in mind for soon 16 years to upgrade it to Win95.

But it is true what you say on Microsoft Time, their routines must be way out of the normal time system.

I can't believe that they are releasing another OS so soon after Vista, personally I planned to stick with XP Pro for a while to allow for Vista to be thoroughly tested by its users i.e me and you! lol By the time I get round to upgrading a new one will be getting released! way to go Bill!

It looks to me like Vista is the new Windows ME. So many installation failures, incompatibility issues, and really not worth the upgrade. It is amazing people are still buying Vista even though by the time all the bugs get worked out you can get a brand new operating system.

Wow, already. I still haven't even gotten Vista yet. Not sure if I will now. Why do they feel the need to do this already?

Actually its normal. MS normal development cycle is a new operating system every 2-3 years, (Apple is every year, Linux Ubuntu every 10 Months) thats the way it always was until XP. The reason we had a 5 year gap was because the initial design for LONGHORN was too ambitious and all the new 'revolutionary' features were removed one by one because they simply didn't work. I think the new version of windows will incorperate features like WinFS that were axed in VISTA.

Dont rule out VISTA, its not that bad. I use it. The biggest problem with VISTA was drivers, (and that wasn't really MS fault) this has been mostly resolved. The only remaining issue is incompatible with certain older programs, and XP certainly had its share of those when it came out.

You can stay when XP for now, but eventually you will have to upgrade if you want to stay current in thew windows enviroment.
