Post - Original Railroad Tycoon Deluxe Available for Download Now!

2K Games have made the original Railroad Tycoon Deluxe (1993) available for download at their site now:
http://www.2kgames.com/railroads/railroads.html
(click "downloads" at the bottom of that page)

I played the original game a lot, so it was a pleasant surprise to find this classic available again..
You can play it in both windowed and full screen mode, but don't expect any state-of-the-art graphics there since it still uses the original graphics.

Nice eh??

Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon is an economic simulation and computer strategy game. There are four versions; the original Railroad Tycoon (1990), Railroad Tycoon II (1998), Railroad Tycoon 3 (2003), and Sid Meier's Railroads! (2006).

Railroad Tycoon was written by game designer Sid Meier and published by MicroProse and though it shares the "Tycoon" suffix, it is entirely unrelated to other Microprose games such as RollerCoaster Tycoon and Transport Tycoon, which were developed by British programmer Chris Sawyer.

Objective

The objective of the game is to build and manage a railroad company, including laying track, building stations, and buying and scheduling trains. The game models supply and demand of goods and passengers as well as a miniature stock market on which players can buy and sell stock of their own or competing companies.

I got Railroad Tycoon 3 for Xmas, I wish I hadn't, its nowhere near as good as the original. They sacrificed in in depth gameplay of the original for eye-candy, which gets old very quickly.

They just don't make games like that anymore..
It's kind of true, since "in the old days" the graphics wasn't good anyway so they had to focus a lot more on the gameplay than they do on most games today..
A crappy storyline can be hidden behind great graphics end effects...

While it isn't exactly the same I think they did a good job with Railroads...It is a good combination of sim and a train set....

It makes for hours of fun, I do wish they kept the stock market side of things a little more complex along with the routing of trains...

Would this game be to complicated for an eight year old? The reason I ask is my nephew love anything that has to do with trains. He would love this game, I think.

The original would/can get pretty complex under certain levels but nothing the junk bonds cheat cant fix...hehehe

Then again don't know what kind of morals that would instill in an 8 year old...LOL

I know I was pretty young when this thing first came out (10) and my grandparents where pretty impressed when I started talking about stocks, company values, and hostile take overs at that age....LOL

Give it a shot it will def get him learning when he isn't realizing it

BTW I am talking about the original the newer one they dumbed down a bit, it's still good though

That's because Sid Meier had nothing to do with it...

WOW, that one is an oldie.

I still prefer Transport Tycoon though, which is a bit newer, has better graphics(Although, who cares about graphics in retro games?), and much more fun to play.
