Post - Server specs

Hi!

We're thinking of putting up a database/web server on Linux, Apache, and MySQL. Any recommendations on the best specs for under $1,000.00 including back-up peripherals? We'd prefer intel over AMD processors. Thanks.

It depends a lot on what you plan to have on that server..
Just running a LAMP (Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP) server doesn't require much at all, but if you're going to host high-traffic sites that uses MySQL a lot then you may need some quite good hardware...

So it's quite hard to give any reccomendations without knowing some more about your plans..

Ok, and we've upped the budget from $1,500 to $2,000. We need a sort of MIS and we're going to use a LAMP stack with Fedora or Ubuntu Server. Basically it'll be a MySQL database with an intranet (Drupal or some other appropriate CMS) serving as a front-end for entering and viewing/printing data.

We would also like to get some of the data into the web for our cleintele. Somebody advised me to have a separate webserver to protect our main database so I'm thinking of using this 1.8 P4 for it as it's already in Ubuntu and I'll just throw in another gig of RAM until we get a proper web server.

Do we also need a separate DNS server? Thanks.

Using a second server as a MySql server is (almost) always a good idea if you can afford it..
But again, the server specs really depends on what kind of traffic you expect so it's really hard to make any recommendations without knowing that..

The server I'm using here is a Intel Xeon 3060 Conroe 2,4Ghz w/2Gb ram and Sata-2 HDDs, and it can cope quite well with 40,000-60,000 daily visitors in total on the sites I'm hosting here.
