Post - Silent Hunter 4: Wolves of the Pacific

It's been a while since I've tried a decent subsim, but after I've looked at the preview movie for Silent Hunter 4: Wolves of the Pacific I'm pretty sure that I'll give this one a try..

You can find a preview of the game here, from Gamespot.com, including some really nice screenshots and a couple of movies.

Lots of interesting info on the official Silent Hunter 4 site here:

Including a nice encyclopedia on the ships:

And some impressive screenshots:

those pics are really detailed, it looks like it will be a very good game for anyone looking for a WWII submarine sim. personally, i wouldn't mind getting a chance to play it when it comes out.

Playing it now

Its good, but it was released it is buggy. They have the 1.1 out but we are now waiting on 1.2. Lots of issues I'm afraid, stupid Destroyer AI, lots of CTD (don't press the A key) and the chronometer is broken making it difficult to gauge target speeds, panning problems with the AA mounts etc...

Haven't ordered it yet, not enough time to play games..

Do you know if they've released a demo of it yet?
(haven't bothered to search.... )

No, and I don't think there will be a Demo. Demo for Sims is kinda tricky for developers. Its usually not worth the effort. Sorry.

I should point out their is a learning curve for the higher realism modes. Of course you can set the Realism to 'easy' but that takes away the fun. Part of the fun is to put your boat into position, plan your attack and see if your torpedo calculations were right. Having good trigonometry skills helps. Of course since the chronometer is broken its hard to get a precise reading on target speed (you have to guess until the developers fix it).

How I am doing? Not too good, Its hard to get the right target speed when the tool doesn't work right. My Torpedoes usually pass astern.

Fortunatly the 1.2 patch should hopefully be out this week.

well mmarsh, since you appear to be the only one with the game so far, keep us updated. i'd really like to know if it will be worth picking up in the near future.

I would say wait just a bit, at least until 1.2 comes out. The bugs aren't earth shattering but they are annoying. Like missing with your torpedoes all the time because you cannot get an accurate speed indicator, and enemy destroyers that are much too tame (even for the Japanese whose ASW ability was poor).

I have been sunk more often on the surface than underwater.

I will say there were some excellent Mods for Silent Hunter 3, the Grey Wolves Expansion (GWX) in particular that really enhanced that game. Some of the changes done in Grey Wolves were incorporated into the SH4. I am sure they work on SH4.

But if you like Sub games, you like SHIV. Its fun now and it will get better once they squash the bugs.

The only last point is while there are 6 classes of subs (+plus the sub-classes), I'm disappointed by the missing of the Narwhal class.
