Post - Sweaty man electrocuted by his computer

Quote:
A 20-YEAR-OLD student was electrocuted by his computer this morning in Shanghai's Yangpu District, Eastday.com reported.

The young man, who was identified as Wu, reportedly opened the external casing of the computer's CPU to prevent it from overheating because he didn't want to switch on the air conditioner in his home.

According to the report, his sweaty legs came into contact with the computer's wiring, which might have caused a short circuit. The computer's internal voltage is as high as 380 volts, enough to give a deadly shock.

Wow. My friends have been shocked a few times working on electronics, but never that badly.

Kinda makes me a little wary of wearing a grounding strap next time I open up.

eek that's terrible. Although if i take the side off my case it's always when its turned off, eliminates any risk.

No chance of that happening to me, I always get someone else to sort out my computer problems, I find it so much safer, for me and the computer.

I have been wrong before, but I was always under the impression that the only mains voltage in home computers was contained safely within the power supply box, the outputs all being 12V and 5v+ and 5v-.
I'm always fooling around within my 'puta case, although I must admit that if I have reason to take the cover off it is usually to install or change hardware, in which case the power is always disconnected. It is almost impossible for me to access my internals without unplugging the power.

EEEEW! That's really a visual I didn't need at 8:00 in the morning... or any time, come to think of it. I guess it's a good thing to remember, but... well maybe someone THAT sweaty could consider showering before sitting down at the computer?
