Post - Targets and Niches

I know that many look at traffic as a "grab all you can" proposition. That's ok for building stats, but what about traffic quality?

HOw are you approaching the need to narrow your focus, and generate worthwhile traffic, as opposed to the hit and miss of general SEO efforts?

Forums and blogs can help (inlcuding DIGG, Technorati, and other social bookmarking sites). That's where we find the specific markets we want to target. Quite time consuming, posting in forums and blogs, but I think it's time spent well.

Depending on your site I would say. People have been discussing about traffic from Digg for a while now.

It is fairly clear that Digg could generate tonnes of traffic to a site if one story made it up to the front page. But the proportion of visitors from Digg revisiting the same site is fairly low. So the main strategy that some people use is trying to make their site "sticky" to those who matter.

Hence I would say if there is only limited amount of time, I would've gone for forum and blogs instead of sites like digg or delicious.

DIGG traffic is considered to be of very "low quality" since you get as you say a ton of traffic from a front page listing but DIGG users are less likely to click ads or buy stuff from your site so they wont generate much revenue for you (in most cases)

Yup, exactly. But then again it is by far one of the top referral site of most of the other bookmarking sites.

It really nothing but Diggs makes huge amount of traffic on our frontpage itself. But the ads would be less and mostly people won't be revisiting the same site again and again.

I am leaning toward using blogs and forums as the first steps in promoting a new site. It gives you a chance to create trust and impress potential customers and clients with your knowledge. That can yield more than all the diggers put together.

@sagemother
Yes, agree with you on that. Finding , the right audience is vital. Forum and blogs prove a better investment than bookmarking sites like digg.

I'm bumping this up because it's something I need help with now. I'm going to start a couple new blogs in 2008, and I want to be smart about how I go about things. I'm willing to take time to build traffic in hopes of having a loyal readership. I really don't see anything more effective than posting intelligent comments on similar blogs, as well as forums dealing with the same topic, and leaving backlinks. Any other ideas?
