Why You Don't Need Vista Now

By Bruce Gain

Windows Vista will have a major impact on the personal computing experience of millions of users worldwide during the coming years, but that doesn't mean Microsoft's latest operating system is a killer product, nor something you necessarily need or want.

Wired News recently obtained a copy of the final RTM, or Release to Manufacturing, build of Windows Vista Ultimate from Microsoft. This edition of the operating system is the most powerful and advanced of the four editions Microsoft will make widely available Jan. 30, 2007.

Other editions of Windows Vista are made for home users (Windows Vista Home Basic, $200, $100 upgrade), users who want a better entertainment experience (Windows Vista Home Premium, $240, $160 upgrade) and business users (Windows Vista Business $300, $200 upgrade). Windows Vista Ultimate ($400, $260 upgrade) is made for the hard-core gamer, the media collector and anyone wishing to squeeze the best performance out of drool-worthy high-end machines.

My software never has bugs. It just develops random features.

I have been in in the Beta program (both Personal and Corporate) and I got to play with both Beta 2 and RC 1.

I would describe Vista as a improvement over XP espically in the GUI and security areas but its hardly a major upgrade. Its also not terribly original. Most of its ideas have been 'borrowed' from Mac OS X and they don't work as well as the Mac counterparts. Its a shame MS couldnt get MS:FS working in time. Also some of the new gadgets arent particularily exciting FireFox 2.0 is better than IE.7 and the touted All-in-One isn't bad, but BitDefender 10 is just as good and a much cheaper.

First of all to run Vista well your going to need a good machine. For Aero your going to need a 128MB graphic card (with a good 3d accelerator) and also I would strongly recommend 2 Gigs of RAM, Vista is a resource pig.

Also for IT professionals, you might want to beware about inserting Vista clients onto an existing XP/2000 domains. Windows VISTA Enterprise GP policies are very different from previous version of Windows. When we were doing some testing in our lab, instead of trying to become compatible with the existing XP/2000 policies it actually tried to change the existing policies so that they would work with it. It was a good thing we were running on a test network. We wont be switching VISTA for at least a year, probably 2. We generally don't install new OS's until the first SP is released.

MS has subsequently issued a warning about this.

Still for my home PC I will be upgrading. Why? I am a Network Engineer and like it or not, its the future. I plan to get my certification beginning 2007.

I'm waiting until after both SP1 and SP2 have been released so I can get it all on one CD...I hate only having XP with SP1 and having to download SP2...such a pain in the ass... :P

Plus I want to build a new machine first

The experience with Microsoft on my own behalf is that it pays off to wait a few months after the initial release to catch up with the latest patches and security updates. I think I'll copy Donkey on this one

For hotfixes that certainly works. If however you are waiting for the first Service Packs expect to wait at least a year to a year and a half.

I guess that is equal to the time I'm going to spend on building my new PC

I think I'll just wait until all the bugs are fixed to upgrade to the new system. That and my then the hunk of junk I call a PC should have some upgrades internally by then.

Just for ha-ha's I Googled release dates so you can gauge how long it will be for MS to realize they released a half done project (I kid, kinda).

XP October 25th 2001
SP1 September 9th 2002
SP2 August 25th 2004

3 years may be a long time to wait to upgrade to Vista, well that depends on how quick the gaming market takes to it....

Either way I will have plenty of time to upgrade and make sure that I have gotten every last penny worth of use out of my current hardware...

By then hopefully I'll have a machine NASA would be proud of

well, here at home, we didn't have a computer with XP until early 2004. microsoft and all those other companies can't expect everyone with a pc to be able to run out and grab vista right when it launches.
