Some fabulous comments and ideas here, thanks guys. I always thought dark background with white text is harsher on our eyes than black on white background. Perhaps I might be wrong then...

If you are going to have dark font's then light color is okay. On the other hand if you prefer to have light fonts the dark background should look good. But generally many prefer to have a light background which is pleasant in nature.

I prefer lighter back rounds like light blue, white, light green, and pink. They just look better to me. Datalk is the perfect lightblue color.

That depends on what your website is about. I rather use light colors on my background because it provides less color contrast but that is just my taste. Some websites look great with dark backgrounds like the ones where you find info about horror movies and rock music.

I like light backgrounds. Actually, I never use dark backgrounds. I think it's too distracting. I like using white because it looks very professional.

Maybe the eyes are getting old but I prefer subdued fonts in a dark background. High contrast fonts and backgrounds makes my eyes water. Another option for me is a white background with dark shades of gray, green, or blue, depending on the theme.

well i have found that when i am watching a dark background, it doesnt keep my attention as long, and can get kind of annoying. when i make my websites, i make sure the background is light.

I think dark backgrounds really make your page come alive if you use lighter text for it, but I think it also depends on the type of site. A lot of professional websites tend to use lighter backgrounds to make it look more simple and easy to navigate.

I have used both for my websites in the past. One of my sites was completely black background. I think a lot of it has to do with how well the colors complement each other. Black backgrounds are harder to match I think because you have more potential legibility problems if you're not careful.
